Elephant hunting

I am going on a safari in Chewore, Africa and I will be hunting elephant. Can anyone reccomend a good double rifle?

45-70 is pretty popular out there isnt it? A .358 lott is considered one of the best calibers for all big game animals so I'm told.

Damn man what you going to do with a elephant?? I don't see eating them, you going just to go to kill it? Dont get me wrong im a hunter but just want to see whats the point of hunting elephant is. I once readt this artical that a guy once took down a elephant with a .22 one shot. I don't know how true this is but It was there.

First off I just want to apologize it has taken me so long to respond, I have been just buried in paperwork for the last several weeks. Second of all I would like to thank you Mr. Buckle, your advice along with that of a very helpful South African man has narrowed down my calibers. Third Jd you can, and I will eat elephant, its best cooked over open fire, but what is not really? I don't know how true that .22 story is when a lot of people hunt elephant with 400 grain bullets. I was really wondering if anyone could recommend a brand or model, it would be extremley helpful. Thanks again, Kyle.

I am now thinking something in 500 nitro express. Oh, and I am looking for a side-by-side double rifle, not an over/under.

Since you've meantioned the african Hunts I got ahold of my dads friend who enjoy's the african dangerous game hunts.

( I would too, just cant afford it; yet LOL)

He's taken Cape buffallo, hippo, lions, and several others over the years.

But anyway back on topic I asked him what a good rifle is, and he agree'd with my .458 lott, and mentioned a few other calibers including the 500 nitro. Anyway he showed me his 500. He has a B Searcy sidelock double rifle in the 500 nitro express.

B. Searcy & Co, makes a very fine double rifle.

when I said .358 lott in my previous post, it was a typo, what I meant was the 458 lott.

Thank you both for posting. I will probaly not be going until summer vacation starts. oh and belt I couldn't afford it either, my uncle is taking me on this trip, and he is supplying the fund for my rifle.

Hey, Kyle. Sorry I'm late in the discussion, you probably have already purchased your gun. Any .40 or larger is fine Africa medicine. The .416 Weatherby or .460 Weatherby are absolutely perfect Africa dangerous game rifle calibers. I'm certainly not taking anything away from the other fine calibers mentioned, but happen to be a Roy Weatherby fan. In addition, I believe they would be less expensive in a bolt action rifle and in the case of the .416 Weatherby, be useful in many other hunting applications such as plains game and large Alaskan and North American game as well. Because of the balistics it's able to reach out farther than many other large calibers to take large game at greater distances. I know with your elephant hunt this might not be a concern, but if you plan to use it on other hunts in the future it's a very wise investment. It has PLENTY of single shot knockdown power for elephant.

I'm sorry Gnlvr I know this post is way overdue, and yes you are correct I already ordered my gun. My uncle and I were shopping And we came across the wonderful brand of Szecsei. I went with one of their seide-by-side bolt actions. Now I know you should always go for practicality, but I gave in. I got the szecsei 700 safari chambered in, get ready for this, 700 sss with is a collared case version of 700 nitro express. I didnt know they made bigger than 600ne befo0re I saw this gun it is a MOTHER. I it'll hurl a 1000, thats right 1000 grain bullet at a sluggish 2000fps, wich figures out to a muzzle energy of 8,900 foot pounds. Loxodanta Afrikana fear me, for I am coming...
