But I am correct in that the [basic] design of semi auto pistols hasn't changed much for a hundred years. As for metallurgy being better in some newer guns--is good, but its not a new design. As for better--I agree small changes can make improvements. How are the new generation H&K's better than the USP?

Not really Blade. Over the last century you'd have blow black operating systems and for pistols like the Steyr you had the blow forward system. For the Luger you had a toggle locked recoil system. The Colt used a link to pivot the barrel for it's recoil operated system. Modern firearms use the 1935 Browing system which is linkless. You also have a variety of trigger types and modern striker system is very new. You're also looking a fewer parts per weapon.

The very basic design hasn't changed but the little things add up, especially materials like the titanium/scandium alloy that allows S&W to make a 12oz .357mag. The P2000 SK is a newer generation than the USP Compact is is simply a little less bulky/more refined. It basically seems like it had an extra generation of R&D over the USP, all being things I approve of. Same reliability, little better recoil, less material in the slide, etc...

As far as basic changes since the blow back 1911's and German Lugers, the same could be said for piston engines. Over 110yrs old now, they keep getting more powerful, more reliable, quiter, cleaner, more efficient, etc., but they are all still four stroke engines with reciprocating pistons. It hasn't been for lack of trying for something better with turbines, Wankel rotary engines, 2-strokes, and recently clean diesels in ordinary cars. It just means that it is a great design that has yet to be topped.

The P2000 is lighter, but still soaks up the recoil, the ergonomics are better and the trigger is improved with better options.

In response to some questions about pocket hosters, I have attached a photo of my P2000 SK .40 with a FSL sub-compact rail-mounted laser in a pocket holster. Works well enough if the pocket is deep enough.

Job--you have good points! White we agree on numerous points--and on the weight issue--lighter isn't always better, so what the SK is 4 ounces lighter than the USP. There are highly reliable guns other than H&K--its a matter of preference which the individual likes.

You have to remember this is a compact pistol and as a rule of thumb the smaller the pistol the less reliable. In the same category you're looking at the SIGs and Glocks.

I AM not convinced that size [five inches or bigger] has anything to do with reliability. Sig and Glock also have reliable pistols about the same size as the SK.

As a general rule and like in a lot of things size matters. There is a limit to what you do can with a short recoil system and a full size cartridge and 3 inches is about the limit. You can use a blow back system but you usually have to limit the power of the cartridge as a consequence.

I tend to agree with that. 3" barreled handguns are about the limit in reference to a short barrel length regarding a reliable handgun. auto's that is...
