recommendations

Need a large caliber home defense pistol to blow away dirtbags close quarter. Thinking about Sig or Glock .40.

Kimber anything. Sig makes nice stuff. such as a p226 x5. Ive got a beretta that Im in love with. (px4 40 s&w)

for close quarter home protection get a louisville slugger, For a quality weapon for in your home look at 9mm. Taurus, Glock, Springfield XD. There are several alternatives. large caliber does not make better protection a .22 can take out a bad guy if you know how to use it.

Also may suggest a GUN SAFETY course prior to purchase.

danger6, justonemore said it right, big calibers stand a better chance of overpenetration so a smaller caliber would be fine of course you could go with a shotgun and use some bird shot. then again I really dont know your dwelling and how its build, good luck

Home defense???... I always have a 12 ga. ....w/ 3 mags, beside my bed.......IMO.....this is the best home defense weapon, one can have.......its almost impossible to miss your target, at close range!! Later, Nohub

All calibers are fine. There is specialized ammunition that will break apart if it hits a solid wall instead of going through. This is a consideration when taking in consideration friendly targets such as; friends, family, and innocent bystanders. However, for a pistol, I would recommend at least a 9mm if able to properly handle the gun to cycle through. This requries a strong wrist for a proper hold. If not, then I recommend a .357 magnum revolver that can shoot .38 caliber ammunition. At least for me, this is mininum firepower to neutralize the threat.

My vote for 12ga. Use light birdshot if over penetration is an issue.
