Hi kristym....You may want to check out the "Shotguns" category within. I know (I think?) you're looking for that unmistakable sound of serious business. I don't know a bunch about shotguns, but many great ones are available.

Good info and pricing in the category.....

There are a lot of good home defense shotguns out there for under $500. The 20 gauge has proven to be as effective if not more so than the 12 gauge, according to Massad Ayoob-i-one-canobi. Get one with an 18.5 inch barrel. Don't get the ones with just the pistol grip. Get one with a good stock.

Check the pump action for smooth easy operation and the way it "fits". Check out the link below.

Two to check out: I like the 870s.

Remington 870 express tactical $414

Mossberg 500 persuader $320

I purchased a 20ga. remington 870 express 26" combo pump action a few months ago and love it. Great gun. You get a slug barrel and a smooth bore. Trap and small game with the smooth bore and deer etc... with the rifled slug barrel. All for around $500. I am sure the tactical one is better for home defense though, but they are all good.
