gun for cougar

Looking for recommendations for a sidearm to hunt cougar. Actually, protection from cougar while bow hunting for elk. Would like the smallest, lightest possible.

My buddy has taken puddle jumper plane trips to go hunting with his bow where weight is a factor in what he can carry. He carries a titanium 44 mag revolver in case he runs into a bear he's not ready for. I believe S&W makes several calibers in titanium revolvers that would suffice. Titanium is light, strong and resistant to the elements. One thing though, because its so light the recoil is felt a lot so he doesn't go plinking with it, just an extremely light backup piece that can handle a lot of abuse.

When I first saw the title of this thread I though someone was looking for a gun for an older lady who liked younger men.
