You certainly don't need to pay that jerk $100 per hour! Personally, I would never talk to a punk like that again.
Here is what you CAN DO on your own: But a small remote control 4WD car, and attach something to hold a 2x2 to the front. Place a target on top of the 2x2. Take turns with a friend having the controller stand behind the shooter who is trying to engage the randomly moving target.
"Pie the corner" is the bread and butter of home defense training. Build a simple corner wall piece with a door, and have someone else place the targets around the corner/door. Then work from holster/low ready to increase speed and accuracy to engage targets as you come around corners and trough doors. Keep in mind that it is important to keep your gun close to your body, and expose as little body neccessary to clear each section.
You need to train at night, with the flashlight you keep next to your gun. Train at night a lot. And tell that jerk you spent that$100 on builting your own range obstacles and targets.
