breaking in holster?????

i have a SIG 229R ...and a brand spankin' new holster. i just received it today. it's safariland 5187 model. i have some retention screws on it, however when i put my weapon in it i just tighten it close to "all the way" so it could "stretch" out. any suggestions? i want to be able to USE my holster and not have to fight it when trying to unholster/reholster.

work it with your hands, oil it as well.

Galco makes a product i think it's called draw ease it a wax like stuff they say it wont harm your gun it lubes your holster so you can draw it faster.My galco holster was very tight i took all my retention screws out and worked it with my hands sat on it steped on it and that sort of stuff it sounds stupid but it worked well. I hope this helps you out

honestly get a plastic bag if it's leather soak the holster in water put the gun in the bag so as to not hurt it or rust it and put it in there it'll form fit it.

Silicone oil works well combined with hand kneading. It protects as well as it softens leather.

wouldn't doubt that although i used baseball glove oil which is really just 3 in 1 machine oil.

Try silicone spray-won't hurt the leather or the gun-most decent holsters are a bit snug at first, especially if they have been wet-formed to the gun.

I make Custom Leather holsters as a side-gig.........and i have to say and i really hope everyone takes to this to heart and their wallet too.

NEVER spray ANYTHING on ANY leather holster, NEVER put it in water, NEVER USE ANY LUBRICANT!!!!!!!!!! EVER!

i have seen hundreds of $70.00 + holsters DESTROYED by doing this.

there are only 2 ways to properly wear a holster.........

#1 WEAR IT! with the gun inside! constantly, it will stretch on its own after a day or two, draw and reholster often *make sure the weapon is unloaded while doing so* after 2-3 days it will fit snug.

#2 wrap the gun in wax paper, shiney side OUT, and wear it for 5 hours, the holster will suck up the wax and become easier to use.

those are the only ways to do it without doing damage to the holster. oils, waters, lubricants will loosen the holster too much and destroy the inside..........every see a leather holster where the inside is flakey and leaves deposits all over your weapon? that is caused by POOR holster stretching. at the end of a propper fit the holster interior should look like it did the day you took it out of the package :-D

My slow method for breaking in a leather holster is to wrap the pistol in wax paper with the wax side facing out and slide it in the holster for a couple of nights and then sit and take it in and out of the holster a couple of hundred times. The faster method to break in the holster is to put a light coating of rubbing alcohol on the holster and wipe it off (most of it will evaporate anyway) and then rub Vaseline petroleum jelly onto the leather and then wipe off and then put a second coat of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly on it and wipe that off. If you have some Saddle Soap that's even better. Of course no leather holster breaks in better than the one you wear with the pistol in it.
