I've got the Maverick 88, which is a carbon copy of the 500 as far as accessories and dimensions are concerned. It's an extremely reliable shotgun, 18 inch barrel and an equal length ammo tube. It looks like a short over and under! I paid around $275 for it (new) last year at a local gun show. The only problems were using Wolf 00 and #4 Buck ammo. Once fired the brass base expanded so much that it wouldn't eject. I had to dig it out myself! I started using "anything" else and had no problems at all. So best bit of advice I can offer right away is to pass on the Wolf ammo!! The shotgun itself has been a real pleasure to own and shoot. You can't beat that price either! I've got some extra Wolf ammo if anyone wants it!! LOL!!.......

Very nice shotgun. I prefer the Mossberg over my Remington 870. Mine has just the pistol grip and a heatshield. Best gun for home defense in my book.

The first one of these I got came with a stripped out bolt between the stock and frame. It was on solid enough to not notice at first, but was obvious on a close inspection. Mossberg replaced it no problem, but it never should have got out of the factory door. I'm still not a big fan of the gun. I am a big guy and have shot lots of shotguns, and this one has one of the worst kicks. This was intended to be our home defense gun, but is so uncomfortable on the range that my wife hates it and I have got her a replacement.

I too have shot several shotguns, from .410 to 12 gauge. If the gun wasn't a semi auto, I was certain that it was going to deliver a heavy kick. It's the nature of the gun and the ammunition you selected. Several manufacturers make low recoil rounds that also offer low muzzle flash. If you want something with a lighter recoil, you have to look at semi auto's or smaller gauge guns. Here's a great article that will provide you with some good information.

Would you suggest a Mossberg 500 over a Remington 870?
