Stainless steels

Keep seeing notes on Stainless steels not rusting. In truth it depends on what type of stainless steels you are refering to. 300 series stainless steels have chrome and nickel plus several other items in their makeup. Generally these metals are soft, not as strong and very suseptable to galling.

Pistol barrels are typically made from the harder and stronger 400 series stainless steels. These steels dont have as much or may not have any nickel in them. They also have a slightly different list of trace elemnts added to them to make them stronger. This (400)series can and usually does rust

, probably due to the lack of nickel in its makeup.

Some stainless steels (like 17-4 ph) are magnetic in nature.

All of this information can be googled.

thanks for listening
