I went to buy a 9mm and filled out the paper work to be called in on Saturday. It came back as delayed... I do not have a criminal record other than traffic tickets. Is this normal and what happens if it is?

Actually, it is "NICS" for the National Instant Check System.

FFLs are required to use this contoversial database when selling a firearm to a citizen.
Delays are common. Some reasons are 'peak hours', 'common names', etc.

The Federal government employee at the NICS number runs your info through the FBI/DOJ database to see if the 'buyer' has a criminal record, outstanding warrants, recorded 'diminished capacity adjudications' (rarely reported) and convictions of domestic violence, etc.

Many citizens are okay with this, but most do not agree with NICS demanding to record the Make, Model, and Serial Number of the fiearm being purchased, prior to approval, as this recorded information is also known as "Gun Registration", which is always a precursory action to "Gun Confiscation".

As I understand it, no information is given during the check that would allow the government to retain data on the type of gun or serial number etc... The only way to trace a gun is to start with the manufacturer and trace it through each subsequent sale.
