What is the best .22 pistol for bulls eye com?

At my club, we have shooters with Ruger Mark IIIs and others with Brownings. Both swear by their choice of gun. Ive been told that Ruger is more prone to jamming than Browning but wonder if this is because of the choice of ammunition. Everyones insight is appreciated.

A friend of mine swears by his Ruger 22/45 and says that he has had one or two jams but blames it on the fact that he hadnt cleaned it in a while and also, that he was using reloads he made himself. After a good cleaning and store bought ammo, he hasnt had that problem since.

I have the Mark III. I really like it, it does however have a jambing problem. I have switched ammo a couple of times and found the better ammo does not jam as much. Go figure. Over all though, I have used it in steel match competitions and have been real happy with it. Just know that you need to buy a few types of ammo at first to see what it likes. Keep it clean too, it tends to start jamming after a few hundred rounds.

For NRA style bullseye competition, the best target pistol under $1000 is the Smith and Wesson 41 with a 5.5 inch bull barrel. You can find good used S&W41s for as little as $650. Many bullseye shooters know and respect this firearm. One old NRA bullseye champ at my local range has owned 27 of them!

S&W Mod. 41, with a 5 bull barrel has been the king of the hill in bullseye matches for many years. Reliable and accurate, it set the standard in the under $1000.00, moderately priced category.

Ruger Mark III pistols also are comfortable to shoot.

There is one more .22 bullseye handgun you may want to look closely at, especially if you already have a standard .45acp with a good trigger: (Look closely at the Marvel .22RF conversion kit for 45acps.) Reliable and extremely accurate. Check out the reviews on the Marvel kit on the web, ask people who own one and shoot one, if you can. The Kimber conversion is right up there with the Marvel.

In fact, shoot all three: the Smith, the Ruger and the Marvel conversion.

See what feels best/ most comfortable for you. That goes a long way toward making up your mind.

For me its my S&W Model 41, or else my Browning Medalist. Both are excellent for any type of .22 competition. Bill T.
