I was just wondring what people think of wilson combat products and service ........i.e. 1911 and clones
I checked out their website, very cool 1911's, also very $$$$!!! But as they say you get what you pay for, maybe one day I'll be a proud owner. I'm actually very interested in the Wilson mags, people speak highly of them and say their the best, I might try them soon.
I use Wilson's mags..there good stuff. Also use the "featherweight" IWB holster, also excellent..check it out next time you go on their site. I 'll have to win the lottery before I get one of Wilson's pistols, however I have my late grandfathers Combat Commander that toured the Wilson shop. I have 4 custom 1911's, that one has the sweetest trigger!
Just ordered a couple mags off the Wilson site, approx $35 each, what I noticed when I google searched them is one site was selling the same for over $50 each!!
I own two of the 8 round stainless Wilson Combat mags for my Colt 1911. They're an excellent magazine and have provided perfect performance.
Thats what Ive been reading, I ordered the 7rd compact mags for my Ultra Carry, my full size Mill Spec is just for range fun so I'm not worried about having the best for it. On the other hand, the carry piece needs to be as close to perfect as possible! I also noticed in all Wilson's pictures they have Powerballs next to the gun, one of my favorites!
You paid about the going price. I found them for $32 today, but paid $27 when I bought them last year. Just like everything else worth owning, it goes up in price!
I bought 3 no name 8rd stainless mags for my Taurus 1911(which is sweet by the way) for $18 on ebay and they work flawlessly. I've seen guys on the range with brand name mags have all kinds of trouble and have to do some filing and fitting to get them to work right. Magazines are extremely simple mechanisms, they're a box a spring and a follower. As long as they're shaped right they'll work. My advice is not to waste your money on expensive mags unless you have money to waste. Check out Mecgar, they're reputable and reasonably priced or try ebay. If you want the seller's name I bought mine from you can send me a private message. As far as Wilson pistols and gun parts I understand them to be among the very best. If I needed a crucial replacement part or upgraded performance part I wouldn't hesitate to order from Wilson as I've never heard a bad word about them.
Mecgar makes a good magazine. When I bought my Beretta 21A 25acp, the Beretta magazine wouldn't stay together. The base plate would fall off after just two or three rounds. I sent it back to Beretta and in the meantime I picked up a Mecgar replacement and it worked flawlessly. I received a brand new mag from Beretta about a month later but still use the Mecgar. I know that some of the specialty manufacturers, like Wilson do add special extras that make their accessories and firearms worth the investment.
I don't debate that, it's just that mags are so simple. I've compared my "cheap" mags to some others and they're not always as pretty as expensive ones but they work great. My pistol came with 2 blued mags that match it so my 3 aftermarket ones are for backup anyway. On second thought they look pretty good too!LOL
Yes, the magazines are a simple piece, technologically speaking. But with the Wilson mags for example, the body of the mag is made of a thicker, higher quality steel or aluminum alloy, a much higher quality spring and follower. Lots of real differences that may not present themself right away but in a cheaper mag, the spring could break, compress prematurely and not re expand to specs, the spring and interior case wall on better mags occasionally have a Teflon coating to prevent binding, etc, etc. The cheap ones may work as well but how long will that reliability last or at what point does the quality manufacturing stand out while the cheap mag fails? As a spare set of mags for the practice range I think the cheap stuff is fine, but when you're counting on them to rock and roll when the time comes, a quality piece of equipment always provides me with the extra bit of confidence!
I agree, but as back ups I don't really use them much so I'm not worried about them wearing prematurely. I know they work and I took them apart when I got them they're definetly solid. I know I took a chance when I bought them but for the price it was worth trying them and they're great.
What do you use for your primary lubricant? Doesn't the graphite make for a bit of a mess? What areas do you apply it to? Slide rails? I've come across some very good cleaning and lubricant products. There are so many now that it's a real buyers market so to speak. I think there are so many quality products available now that proper cleaning and correct use of one of the good lubricants is all that's necessary. Proper use of most products on the market today is all that's required in most cases.
I was talking about the mags, you wouldnt want to any liquid of any kind in your mag; that would just attract dust. For the pistol I use a little bit of remoil. I put a little graphite around the follower, may not even need any at all, just a tip I got I got from a master class shooter a long time ago. Not enough to make a mess.
Okay, that makes better sense. The last thing I read was about Ag keeping his guns spotless and I just assumed that was what you meant! You know what assuming gets you sometimes!! I use a product I found recently after purchasing my Seecamp. Larry recommends a product called Eezox. Once applied it dries, no fingerprinting, no mess and excellent protection. You can use it on everything.
My Wilson mags arrived yesterday, just by looks and feel you can tell the quality difference, very nice.
