I am looking for advice about selecting a handgun for home defense. I am a complete novice when it comes to firearms. My only experience has been a twenty hour course sponsored by local law enforcement. The instruction focused on gun safety, drawing from a holster, and firing about 250 rounds on the range. The toughest part of the course for me was taking apart the gun and putting it back together. I am a dunce when it comes to anything mechanical. Obviously I am not a gun enthusiast and don't expect to become one, but I am prepared to invest the time to become proficient with a home defense pistol. My wife and fourteen year old son also want to become proficient. I am not interested in a gun with lots of bells and whistles since special features would be lost on me. I do not intend to carry concealed, carry into the woods, or shoot in competition. We're talking basic home security in a suburban, middle-class community. I want one gun that is 1. easy to handle, 2. simple to use and maintain, 3. reliable. My price range is below $900. A friend suggested the Sig Sauer P239. Another friend, a serving police officer, said to forget the Sig and get down to basics. He recommended the S&W Model 10 revolver or the S&W Model 620 revolver. There is obviously a lot of experience and expertise on this list. What do you think of these recommendations? What would you recommend. Thanks in advance.
