Sethro, I would use the approach that it's better that the kids be taught safety and respect of firearms than have TV and movies be their only exposure. If you have the oppurtunity take them shooting and stress safe muzzle control (downrange at all times) and always treat a gun as if it were loaded. And of course don't touch them unless supervised! A useful demonstration is also shooting water bottles and fruit like melons and such. Follow this with a discussion about what a person or animal might look like if shot similarly. After a shooting session a good lesson in proper cleaning and care and the reasons for doing so is also a good idea. All of this will demonstrate safety and discipline and will serve greatly to demistify firearms in your children's minds.
