S&W Sigma SW9VE vs SW40VE

i purchasing my first my first gun and dont know which caliber to go with. Im starting the sheriffs academy and want to use this gun for shooting practice/training as well as protection around my house (knock on wood).



i found the 9mm for $230 at a local gun range with condition at 95%



my budget was $300 and i was considering getting the 40 just because i heard it has more power.



any advice on which is over all better gun and why?
