1911's

This being the year 2011, and the 100 year anniversary of the 1911, I have decided that I really need to own one. The problems start with deciding which to buy. The only criteria I have to start with is that it be an American made .45. After that, it's considerably more difficult. New vs. pre-owned, manufacturer, model, etc. I have looked at the ratings in this directory of the various 1911's. I have also looked at several of them that I found interesting. (A friend of mine has 25!) Having other financial commitments forces me to limit myself to one. Any suggestions from those of you in the know? The 1911 is just to have. I already have a couple of carry guns, and a home-defense shotgun.

I have two Kimbers and like them. But I suggest you go shooting with your friend and let that help you make your decision.

Well, that would seem logical, but he really only shoots a couple of them and I've already done that. He doesn't have a Kimber in the group.

There are so many 1911s out there to choose from. If I were going to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1911, I would get a Colt series 70. They are now making the anniversery edtion Colts for up to $3000. BUT! Colts were simple combat handguns so I would go with the standard Government GI version. Nothing fancy.

I own a Colt model 1991 series 80. I payed around $700 for it. The good thing about quality 1911s is that they retain their value. So the extra money you spend will not be wasted.

What price range are you looking at? Buy something that would keep its value.

In the intervening 9 months since my last post, I purchased a Kimber Super Carry Pro, and am quite happy with it even though it may not be a traditional 1911. After a lot of thought, I guess I look at it from the point of view that Kimber made the 1911 that had the features that I decided that I would like to have.
