I was a volunteer In my town from 16 to 20. I got awards for Fireman of the year, Firefighter of the year, and top responder for Fire and EMS 2-3 years. I resigned a few months ago due to conflict of interest with my job. I miss alot of em but theres a few that I owe a smackdown to. I still keep my EMT-B current and have my certs for FFII, Hazmat, Rescue tech

I always hated ems until I had to take EMT when my dept. made it a requirement and It changed my outlook completely. You see a much more direct reaction from the people you help. When I was still in class I was riding to get precepted and the 2nd call I was on was respritory arrest and the medic that was observing me told me to do respirations via bag valve and after about ten she started breathing on her own. By the time we got to the hospital she was up and talking! Needless to say, I was hooked from that day til now. I just wish someone would have warned me about how many people you cant save. You have to take the good with the bad and just knowing that your making a difference makes it all worth while even with thank yous being so few and far between. If nothing else you should take a first responder course which any fire/law/security agency should pay for. It also helps on a resume.
