Hey Glockfan,
Your gunsmith was right. Actually if you just write a bill of sale, copy your drivers license, sign the bill of sale and each of you keep a copy, you're good. If you're concerned about the seller coming back later to say you stole it, then I would have the signatures notarized. There is no legal requirement to sell a second hand firearm. The only time a firearm is registered is when it is sold to the original owner.
