WHAT'S THE RIGHT ROUND TO USE?

Postby mandrakke » Fri Nov 28, 2008 7:11 am

I have an original old Colt Lightning rifle. The writing on the barrel says .44 Cal. It used to work fine as long as I used cartridges cal. 44-40 with no extractor groove, while if I use the normal 44-40 rounds now normally available (with an extractor groove) the following problem arises: when I open the slide and a new round comes out of the magazine, it is placed onto the elevator in the wrong manner, i.e. not horizontal but oblique (with its rim up), which makes it impossible to chamber it. It looks like this is caused by the extractor groove on the rounds, since the magazine stop mistakenly sticks into such groove. With "smooth" ammo this did not happen. So my question is: where can I find such smooth rounds? Are they called differently? Thank you very much!

Mandrakke, while I have no personal information about this rifle, I'm going to include a few links for you to do some checking on your own. It appears as though you have a very special and valuable rifle! I think if you contact some of these individuals, you'll find the information you're seeking. Good luck! Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

If you have a vintage Colt lightning you may not want to fire it! The repros go for $800.
