LIGHTS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT

Watchmaker, can you answer this question for me please?
I would appreciate a bit of information. I've got three double 3V Lithium tac lights that use the Xenon lamps. They're bright SOB's but they don't last long at all. I bought rechargeable batteries to help offset the cost but they're even worse for battery life. I'm only getting about 15 minutes with the rechargeables, probably twice that or more with throw aways. My question finally is how can a single LED tac light be as bright as a Xenon lamp? My lights are approximately 80 lumens and the LED's I'm seeing are equivalent to them and the battery life is over 10 hours! I've got some LED lights that aren't close to being that bright. Have they got a new type of LED now? How are they getting that kind of battery life out of those LED's as well as comparable brightness? They've got so many new products out there now and at these prices I'd like to know everything necessary before buying a new one. Any recommendations for a tactical size light would be appreciated, something that will fit on a picatinny rail system. Thanks very much!

The rechargeables last less time because they have half of the capacity (750 mah instead of 1500 mah)
The new Surefire 6PL (LED) will output a strong LED light BUT will not last the 11 hours that is advertised. At about four hours the output will be 50 %. Maybe 11 hours is to total darkness, and the LED's can glow for a long time.
How well the output will please you is another matter, LED's are notorious for poor throw and poor penetration in fog or smoke, especially if you want the range to be useable in a rifle.
For a rifle I will go with the Surefire Centurion III (incandescent) and the optional P-91 lamp for 200 lumens.
Of course the run time will be only 20 minutes, but in a rifle you switch the light much less than with a hand held tactical light.
My plans are to buy and review a couple of the new LED's lights with increased output, but I really don't expect much in the way of range.
My next post will review one of the small pocket/key chain lights
