My 629 is 8-3/8" barreled. Had it since 1988. The only thing I changed was the grips. Smooth walnut grips just roll in my hand like a hoglegged Ruger. Took my granson to the range the other day to do some teachin. He shot my .22, .380 and .40, but when a friend of his called him on the way home, all he could talk about was the .44 magnum. I get so stoked when I take it to the rangs, I generally shoot a coupla clips through my Ruger MK512 to calm down. The .44 don't kick like a .454 or .44 automag.

My 629 started life as a 8 3/8 barrel but I couldn't leave that alone. I replaced the barrel myself with a preformance center 7.5 inch. Taught myself how to work the triggers and replaced the grips with smooth walnut finger groves. Instead of the wieghts in the barrel lug I put a oak dowel stained to match the grips. Toped it off with a Leupold 2x and it is one heck of a pistol now.

I have the DX version w 6". I also had an action job done on it. It is very accurate & smooth. My pet load w/ 240 jhp using 24.5 gr. of WW296 [or H-110] gives me bench rest ragged holes @25 yds. }The second most accurate handgun I've ever owned.{ When the rules changed to allow higher capacity revolvers at shoots, I had to retire this boy per 627's but if you can find an excellent DX edition of this guy...

If you just take off the grips and tighten the screw at the bottom of the grip the trigger pull goes to almost nothing. Mine currently with a 6 inch barrel has a pull of just a deep breath. It makes for an almost target quality trigger with a caliber that will blow soup cans out of most (flesh) targets. I can't wait to buy the newer version that is cut down from the performance center

I found that dual trapezoid Magna-Ports helped quite a bit for rapid fire with my 629. I have shot NRA 50 ft. gallery which is a one handed competition so keeping the muzzle-rise down is important. I got my best groups using 240 gr. JHP with 23 gr. of Win 296.

Are you guys running into any problems of having bullets coming unseated from their casings with your 629's? In other words, after round 1 is fired are the remaining rounds becoming unseated?

My 329PD is notorious for this when loading up with "cheaper" factory loads. The good stuff holds (Federal Hydrashoks, etc.) but when I practice with the crap (but affordable!) I load one, maybe two at a time.....

Yep I got one it was an heirloom for my family.

I like it a lot the one I have is easily an exemplary firearm.

It has had a lot of work done to it sweet double action, I put rubber grips on it.

Real tight very little cylinder gap very accurate.

It is also very light no idea why but under 35 ounces, so recoil ca n be stiff.

I would give it a 5 if it had a better single action it is unusable.

I have had all kinds of weird jump, stuck in cylinder and total inaccuracy with +p loads.

the older ones were lighter and only good for standard loads, 240 gr 1300fps 180gr 1600fps and slow 300gr loads.

don't shoot the hot stuff esp in a short or light gun, the good mfrs even warn you of it.

best case cylinder, timing or the yoke cam be damaged, if you know one take it to a good smith and they can tell you how strong it is.

I will never exceed 270s in mine just not worth the work of fixing it.

My gun must have been assembled by a perfectionist because it's perfect. The stock rubber grips feel like custom grips to my large size 11 hands. The sights are perfect. The trigger pull is light. It shoots without problem. A very accurate gun to shoot. I love it! Can't say the same for other S & W's I've owned.
