Taurus 38 Special

I obtained my Grandpa's 38 Special Taurus yesterday. It has stamped on the end of the cylinder and the cylinder swing out 579. I have the serial # but Taurus can't help other than saying it's an old gun. Can you give me information about it? How old is it? Value? Thanks
