Both are fairly cheap to shoot. 223 is maybe a little cheaper. That style of gun is really meant for the .223. And for practical purposes (target, varmit, competition) the .223 is a great round. Not to mention the price difference between the two for the AR style rifle. If your wanting the 7.62 an AK is the way to go.... But thats my opinion.........

Hi JD, I've got an AR 15 and like it a lot. The two calibers are the only thing that separates the two rifles. They both function essentially the same. The 308 is considerably more powerful and is the caliber that most SWAT and military snipers use. If you're a hunter, you can use the 308 for hunting. Provided you use a 5 round magazine while hunting. Most states won't allow you to use a 223 for deer (medium) size game. Even though I own an AR 15, I would love to own an AR 10 too. Everything will be more expensive to purchase for the 308, the ammunition is more expensive but can be had for a few dollars more than the .223, depending on what you're buying. Practice ammo is reasonable but high performance ammo is going to require some extra clam$$! They're both worth owning! I think half the fun of owning a rifle on an AR platform is being able to accessorise it. The parts available are endless!

They've got some strange laws (and odors) in that state. Are there any good points to New Jersey? Do they have indoor plumbing there yet?
