I dont know the laws in CA, but dont you only have to be 21 to BUY a handgun. I thought you could OWN one at 18. At least that the law wehre i live. Just like you have to be 21 to BUY ammo, but you can have it at 18. You should check it out maybe you can get your parents to buy one as a gift for you!! Do make sure and check your local laws though.....I wouldn't want to get you in trouble.

For a first rifle I would DEFINITELY go with a .22LR (maybe a ruger) and here's why -

1. They are generally less expensive to buy.

2. They are usually accepted at all outdoor AND indoor ranges so you can shoot them anywhere

3. The ammo is the absolute cheapest bullet you can buy. You can shoot 1000's of rounds without spending much money

4. As you learn to shoot and get more comfortable, you can always go up in caliber later.

also, here in florida the law is the same as lotsip's homestate. you cant buy a handgun at 18, but you can own one and shoot it at the range.

good luck!!!

If you want a cheap rifle that I've heard nothing but good things about, look into a SKS. They are a russian design like the AK47 but semi-auto. The 7.62 round is a bit more powerful but you'll grow into it easily. I shoot a .223 in my M16 for work, no kick like at all. I think you'd be ok with a little haha. Also the SKS has a ton of mods, almost as many as the M16 does becuase they are so cheap and popular. One more advantage is that they can take a beating and shoot great, even crap ammo shoots well. Remember the russian made very poor quality ammo and large quanities so their rifles had to handle it. Our worst quality is probably 10x better then their medium stuff.

I'm going to look into buying one when i get out of afghan.
