Correct me if Im wrong.(I probably am), but I was always under the impression that dry firing is not good for rimfire pistols, not so much harmful to centerfire pistols.
Ive heard of people dry firing NEW pistols to break in the trigger. Again...Im no expert...

The reason that dry firing a rimfire is bad,is that the firing pin will strike the chamber where the cartridge rim normally is, thus damaging the striking tip of the pin.
On MODERN centerfire pistols the firing pin is restrained by a spring. Dry firing one of these normally does not pose a serious problem.
The dry firing problem was brought about by the old Smith and Wessons,(and other older weapons), with the firing pin built right into the hammer.
Dry firing would cause the firing pin to eventually snap off.
